If a stinging sensation strikes your skin upon application of your nightly lotions and potions, it’s a signal that you need two things: a moisturizer for sensitive skin and a break from irritating skincare ingredients like exfoliators and acids. Whether you naturally have sensitive skin, or your barrier is over-treated and in need of repair, a calming sensitive skin moisturizer can do wonders to bring you back to center.
“Having an occasional sensitization to a product can occur to many people, but an ongoing sensitivity to products and persistent symptoms like redness, irritation, or itching, may indicate a possible underlying condition,” says Michael Kassardjian, D.O., board-certified dermatologist in LA, such as eczema, psoriasis, or rosacea.
Meet the Experts: Michael Kassardjian, D.O., board-certified dermatologist in LA; Joshua Zeichner, M.D., director of cosmetic and clinical research in dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital; David Lortscher, M.D., board-certified dermatologist and founder of Curology; Arielle Kauvar, M.D., director of New York Laser & Skin Care and clinical professor of dermatology at NYU School of Medicine.
Sensitivity usually also comes with dryness because “having a thinner or damaged skin barrier allows moisture to escape more easily,” Dr. Kassardjian explains. Mature skin may also be more sensitive because the skin barrier thins with age, he adds, which may mean you need to switch up products every few years.

What type of moisturizer is best for sensitive skin?
Free of irritants: Be cautious of moisturizers that contains sulfates, alcohol, preservatives, dyes, or fragrance. In fact, “fragrances are a common cause of skin irritation and allergies,” says Dr. Zeichner.
No acids: “While everyone wants radiant skin, acids often cause more harm than good in people who have sensitive skin,” says Dr. Zeichner. “They work by enhancing exfoliation but can lead to skin barrier disruption in people with sensitive skin.” Common ones to keep an eye for include salicylic, lactic, and glycolic acids.
Skin-soothing: The experts we talked to recommend looking for ingredients that boost hydration, soothe irritation, and have healing properties. Ceramides, hyaluronic acid, aloe vera, soy, and colloidal oatmeal are all safe bets.
As you try a new product, listen to your skin. “It can take six to eight weeks after you start using a product for negative effects to show up—and six to eight weeks more weeks for negative effects to subside,” says Dr. Lortscher.

How can you tell if your skin is sensitive?
“Sensitive skin is not necessarily a clinical diagnosis by dermatologists, but rather meant as skin that may have a higher tendency to react than average,” says Dr. Kassardjian. This is due to a weaker skin barrier, which allows irritants—say, from a certain ingredient or colder weather—to penetrate your skin more readily. The result? Redness, itching, or stinging.
Some people simply have more sensitive skin than others. If your skin regularly feels or looks red, itchy, or inflamed, you might need to seek out gentler skincare products or speak with a dermatologist to determine a possible root cause or irritation. Note: You may be more sensitive during the winter or summer months or after using new products even if you don’t typically experience irritation.
Any new sensation of itching, burning, stinging, redness, dryness, cracking, or acne breakouts is worth investigating. It’s a good idea to discontinue new products if you experience sensitive skin symptoms and to talk to a dermatologist if the symptoms don’t clear up in a few days.
Ingredients to avoid for sensitive skin
Sensitive skin can be irritated by chemicals and artificial additives. It’s best to steer clear of products that have artificial fragrances, colorants, or dyes. If you’re prone to acne, it’s a good idea to avoid oils that can clog pores. Also, alcohols, parabens, sulfates, and preservatives can all cause issues.
Look for skincare products that have been dermatologist tested and are labeled as noncomedogenic and hypoallergenic to help reduce the chance of irritation. If you have a specific skin condition, like eczema, it’s also a good idea to look for products that have been approved by the National Eczema Association or similar organizations.
